Some experiences in nature are so magical they stay with you a lifetime.
Ten years ago I visited a Mexican friend in Hermosillo, the dry and dusty capital of the state of Sonora. The weekend I arrived she gathered a small crew of friends and we all piled into her old Ford truck for a day of adventure in the dunes alongside the Sea of Cortez. We parked the car near the beach and with sandboards in hand trudged
through the soft sand to the top of the dunes. The calm, flat ocean blazed bright blue under the warm Mexican sun. For hours we careened and cavorted down the dunes, leaving snaking trails in the sand (or larger depressions where gravity got the better of us). It was brilliant fun. As night fell and the BBQ got going, I felt contented and happy with the day.
But the best was yet to come.
